THE ROCKFORD FILES vs. MAGNUM P.I.

Yesterday I saw a tweet by Steve Hamilton, author of the Alex McKnight PI series, asking us to choose between two TV classics, The Rockford Files (1974-80) and Magnum, P.I. (1980-88).

I'm a fan of both and own both complete DVD sets. I chose Rockford because I believe its wry, laid-back approach to the PI show paved the way for Magnum's similar slacker elements. Without his slacker side, Magnum would be much like Rockford's predecessor Mannix, a straight man of action.
